There are numerous plants that will thrive for you but the best advice will come from a worker in your local nursery. I suggest some of the ground covers that take little work and you might even try some of the ferns (depends on water and soil). Certain of the succulents will be ok but tend to get 'leggy' and you might consider any one of the native plants (be careful as some are protected by law). Use native plants as they have adapted to the surroundings and use those that best match your area.

Impatiens, Begonia Tuberous (this one have flowers and not just leaves), Forget Me Not, Bleeding Heart, Vinca Minor (for groundcover).

Impatients, hosta, bleeding heart, astillbe, reblooming daylilly, primrose, forgetme-nots, toad lily and lenten rose. Just the impatients are annuals and all the rest will come back year after year. Have fun.
