When I baught a Dell 6400 Inspirion laptop, I did not opt for the OS CD, instead it came loaded on the laptop. Now I want to partition the disk to install linux as well. Can I take a back up of the windows XP software so that I cab reinstall it later.

If your OS Came loaded on the system, then you probably have it on another partition as a system restore... if you do not have it, I would look on e-bay... and post a request on craig's list

The original Dell XP cabs are located in the Utility partition, so as long as you leave that intact along with the Dell utilities that will run off of it you should be ok. But it you're talking about wiping the disk clean, it won't work because you won't have anything to boot into the XP setup with.

You can request a copy of the CD. You have the right to have one since you paid for it. It will cost you for shipping, though. They will ask for ID and the PC service tag number to confirm that you are the owner. I think it will cost something like $10. It is different from a retail XP CD, because it has Dell ID stuff embedded in it.

yes but it might be easier to use a disk partition software like partition magic and just add a linux partition (and not lose windows) rather than have to delete/create a windows and linux partition

You have 2 backup issues here.
1. there should be a program on the Dell to make recovery CD/DVD's. They don't mail them anymore so you have to make them yourself

2. Should do a full Ghost (or other) full drive backup, just in case. Reviews for which one at http://disk-imaging-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
