There are several possible reasons why Nobel did not create a prize for mathematics. Nobel's will speaks of prizes for those inventions or discoveries of greatest practical benefit to mankind, possibly having in mind practical rather than theoretical works. Because mathematics is not considered as practical a science as the others that are recognized, this would explain the lack of a Mathematics prize.

Another possible reason is that there was already a well known Scandinavian prize for mathematicians. The existing mathematical awards at the time were mainly due to the work of Gösta Mittag-Leffler, who founded the Acta Mathematica, a century later still one of the world's leading mathematical journals. Through his influence in Stockholm he persuaded King Oscar II to endow prize competitions and honor distinguished mathematicians all over Europe, including Hermite, Bertrand, Weierstrass, and Poincaré.

Myth has it that Nobel refused to endow a mathematics prize as his wife or his mistress had an affair with the mathematician Mittag-Leffler. However, this story is not supported by any historical evidence: Alfred Nobel never married.

Several prizes in Mathematics have similarities to the Nobel Prize. The Fields Medal is often described as the Nobel Prize of mathematics, but it differs in being awarded only once every four years to people under forty years old. A comparison may be made with the Crafoord Prize, awarded by the Swedish Royal Academy since 1982. Other comparable prizes are the Abel Prize, awarded by the Norwegian government as of 2001; and the Shaw Prize in mathematical sciences given since 2004.

The rumor is because Nobel's wife had an affair with a mathematician, but this is not true.

The reason that there is no Nobel prize in mathematics is because Nobel created the prizes in categories that were closest to the work he had done. Mathematics was just not something he had done a lot of work in.

Some one told me a long time ago that mathematics is the queen of the sciences.Although I am a right brained person(philosophy history literature etc) I study mathematics and enjoy what I can understand. I think the queen should get the recognition she deserves. She is so involved in our everyday lives we take her for granted.Mathematics by all means should receive the Nobel prize.

Generally, pure Physicist hate pure Matematicians... That's happens allaround the world. people who were physicist thinks that mathematic is only a way, a tool, or even a language to solve physics. But, I think the inventor of "golden ratio" that involves the ratio of almost everything on earth must receive Nobel...

Well, thats because Nobel is from Nobel...
If it's from me, I will give them to mathematicians....

Please don't feel offended but according to a legend Alfred Nobel's wife ran away with a Mathematician and from that day Alfred Nobel had a serious grudge on Mathematics and Mathematicians.

Although this is what people all over the world believe till now. It is another of those mysteries about great people which the entire world is puzzled. There are people who are still trying to solve this mystery.

But what I have written in the first paragraph is what the world believes.
