You must have that U-shaped trap or your installation will not pass a plumbing inspection.

Its purpose is to hold water to close off the drain pipe so that the gases from the sewer do not backup into your room. That is both dangerous and smelly when they do that. The trap is essential.

As a fringe benefit it also traps debris that could clog up the drains from the fixtures making it easier to clear them.

Yes it blocks sewer gas. It also creates a siphon that actually pulls the water out of the sink. that is why you should see the water swirling as it goes down. if this is not happening it indicates the drain is starting to clog. This is a fact, not something i made up.

The U shape is called a drain trap so any object that might go down the drain wont get lodged further down the drain. If an object falls down the drain it will stay in the bottom of the U trap all you do is unscrew the trap and retrieve the object. This is a good invention many people loose rings down drains.

To catch heavier debris. That way it is less likely to clog your drain further down the line and cost more to unclog. Sometimes if the drain gets clogged you have to remove the u-shaped bend and dump the stuff. I think you call the u-shaped thing a trap.
Yes, There would be a disadvadntage to having a straight one . You are in bigger trouble if it get's clogged. It's more costly to get unclogged and you would have to call a plumber.
