I noticed that Indian first-class cricket has, like County Cricket, too many teams in their first division. The only way to improve the standard of Indian cricket would be to have a situation like the one in Australia, where the domestic game relies on strength versus strength. They only have six teams in their Sheffield Shield, each capable of beating the other on any given day.South Africa recently went this route by reducing the number of professional teams in the country from fourteen to eight.

India should keep their current competitions but add one that runs concurrently with the first division games. Maybe have 4(North,South,East,West)-8 regional sides playing each other home and away. When players get called up for national duty, you just replace them with players from any team from the provinces that make up that region, thus giving them an opportunity at a level closest to actual test match cricket.

Ranking on the basis of performance should be given after each match and the same should be made the only criteria for selection in the Indian team. If this is done, each and every player who performs, only will get selected and hence current performance will become prime criteria and will surely help
to improve cricket in India.
