I've tried hard water, softened water, water clarification drops and none seem to work. I drain out 2/3 of the water in the tank about every other week and it still turns green. Even shortly after taking all the tanks contents out and doing a thorough cleaning, a few weeks later it's al green again...there is no algae build up on the plants or rocks, so this one has been spun for a loop. any suggestions?

What you have is a free-floating algae. Unlike the stringy algae usually found in fish tanks, this type is from one to just a few cells that are suspended in your water. Just like the attached type, the treatment is to remove a light source so the algae can't undergo photosynthesis and to remove nutrients that it is using as fertilizer.

Lighting can be controlled by turning off the aquarium light, reducing the time the light is on, and closing any nearby curtains or blinds.

Nutrients are controlled by 25% weekly water changes (using a gravel vacuum to get any stuff that falls between the gravel), not overfeeding (only give what your fish will eat in about 2-3 minutes, no more than twice a day), and using aquatic plants to compete with the algae for nutrients. Since you have a free-floating variety, a floating plant (duckweed, water sprite, etc.) would both shade the algae below and absorb nutrients if the plants were stocked highly enough. If plants are used for algae control, INCREASE you lighting period to give the aquatic plants more time to photosynthesize and absorb more nutrients.

Green water is usually caused by to much light. If the tank is near a south facing window you may need to move the tank away from the window (assuming you live in the northern hemisphere). Over feeding can also contribute to the problem.

after you clean it let it run for a couple of days with no fish and you got to make sure the pH levels are OK and try water conditioner in it and if you have a light your not ment to leave it on all the time only of a night time
