Iodine? I've never heard of using it for a sore throat. Yes, it loses potency after its stored for a while. Germs will also grow in it.
You can gargle with hydrogen peroxide (don't swallow it).

Like all morticians they do lose their efficiency, even Iodine There should be an expiration date on the bottle or if it is over a year old get ride of it.. if you want an alternative to iodine try a essential oil like Ginger it is great for sore throats. Mix 4 or 5 drops in a 4oz spray bottle of water if you want it stronger no more then 8 drops. OH yea shake it before you use it. and I mean the bottle. :>) Most health stores carry it.

Like others have said, putting iodine in your mouth/throat can/will kill you.
There is absolutely no logical/physiological reason that putting iodine on your wrists would have any effect whatsoever on a sore throat. That sounds like some goofy medieval joojoo.
Gargling with warm salty water has always been the best remedy for me (don't swallow it).

You don't take iodine internally, if you have a sore throat, gargle with some warm salt water.

Once a day for 2 days and your sore throat is gone..after you swab, spit and your throat will burn a little..not enough iodine to hurt you...I am not doing this everyday, think about it.

If your sore throat is caused by thyroid then you can take iodine under a doctor's prescription. I have big and swollen thyroid and the specialist prescribed drops of iodine in a glass of water.
Please take this only under medical observation. I won't tell you how much and how often. It did help my sore throat and my thyroid gone. He prescribed other raw seafoods.

DO NOT TAKE IODINE INTERNALLY. Iodine is toxic. You need very small amounts in your diet to keep your thyroid functioning, but any more than that and it will poison you. And no, it will not help your throat. Please do not drink it, if you have already tried, I would recommend you call poison control or go to a hospital immediately.

Natural remedies could be tried for relief from discomfort due to sore throat.
Ginger (Zingiber Officinale) can be gargled as and when needed or drink ginger tea thrice a day. Ginger alleviates infection and inflammation. Ginger tea can be brewed from a few pieces of fresh root, or using a tsp of ground ginger power or by using a pre-mixed tea bag in a cup of hot water.

Gargle with warm water and salt. If you have any honey, take that after the gargling.
