The number one reason why the UN is dysfunctional is because the US stands in the way of the UN becoming more effective.

If we would pay our dues, respect international law, and strengthen instead of weaken the UN, we would have a lot more peaceful world.

the UN will never work since all countries FIRST priority is themselves and NOT each other.

second read about the 1930's US isolationism, and the raise of Hitler in Europe.

Before Bush went in he tried to make the UN relevant. They had sanctions that they chose not to enforce. US went into Iraq so that the US would still be Relevant. The US pays the biggest portion of the UN's budget. Follows International law closer than any other nation. The US taxpayer shells out more funds to help the 3rd World than any other nation.

World War I....the UN...when Syria, Somalia and countries like that are on the human rights commissions...come on the UN is microcosm of what is exactly wrong with the world...

The UN functions as a mediation service between nations.
It has no direct enforcement powers of its own. So, it being more effective just means helping countries negotiate better.

Isolationism only works if a country is self sufficient, and if all the other countries are willing to leave it alone. Neither apply to the US.

That's very funny. The UN is weak because there's so much opposition to the US among member nations. It gets over 20 percent of its funding from US. Cut it off.

try reading Moral Man Immoral Nations by Reihold Neibuhr (sp), it and WWII i think explain what is wrong with isolationism.

I am sorry, but when a country violates multiple resolutions, and the UN does nothing, it is completely ineffective
