depending on the year and model, I would check a few things....
1.when is the last time you replaced the oxygen sensor? If never, these need changing out at approx 60k miles. (these regulate the air/fuel mixture going into the motor, if wornout, you mixture could be to olean or rich, either one will make your car fail)
2.Change the oil, old worn out oil will introduce cantaminants into the combustion chamber and cause a dirty burn helping you fail...remember, even new cars burn oil at a veeeery slow rate...the bore linigs are coated with oil to aid in compression and lubrication.
3.Change your air filter, a dirty filter can enrich your mixture and also help you fail, not to mention you get less power and mileage.
4.Get your engine management's computer codes pulled....any trouble coades will point at the problem and help keep you from taking the shotgun scatter approach to solving the problem.
5. Check your ign timing, if too retarded or advanced, your engine will not pass smog....it will either cause a retarded
condition, where incomplete combustion will take place, or it will advance the spark too much, causing elevated Nitrous Oxide emissions.
6. Check your tire pressure, a flatter tire will cause the engine to work hard to move your car, properly inlfated tires help fight smog...and help increase your car's performance and mileage.
7. Check for vacuum leaks, vacuum leaks cause false lean conditions, making your sensors think a different amount of air is being sucked in....this will throw calibration off and make your car run erratically and help you fail smog....
A trick is to run a slow trickle of propane around the intake, throttle body/valve cover gaskets, if the car accelerates, then you have a leak....fix it and continue the leak test to find other potential problems...

If all is well tuned , run the car down the freeway at 65mph for 10 miles to heat up the Catalyst Converter, most car that fail the smog test because there just started and then tested and not given the time to heat up the Cat so it has time to do its job, Good Luck and GOD Bless,

make/model/year, and what it failed for would be helpful, but unless it came close to passing, "tricks" probably wont help. if you want to try again without taking it to a mechanic, try an oil change, make sure its warmed up well, as a previous user said, dont take it in on a very hot day, dont have a full tank of gas (important), inflate the tires to max(if dyno test is done).

Sometimes you can lean out the carb and it will help it pass. It may not run too good, but after the test, go ahead and readjust the carb.

honest man the only way to cheat is not do it. if your car won't pass. it won't pass. Beleive me I tried everything for my old beater and should have just gotten the neccsary part to begin with. I waisted more money trying to cheat than a new carb costed. just get your part.

It all depends on why it failed the test. Have you had it tested yet? I am an certified emission test/repair tech. I can help if you tell me why it failed.
