As you say that statement is very contradictory!

My interpretation of the subject would be of a very close friend, neighbour, relative who has helped out few to many people in a special way. Possibly they even helped you with something within your life or situation that you would always look at that person as "special" or "famous" as you could always feel like they would be able to help anyone in that special way. They seem to have that certain "quality reputation" that is known within a neighbourhood or group of friends or within a family.

"Fame" is not necessarily associated with riches and fancy cars. It is in the eyes of the beholder, as they say.

Hope this assists you in some way. Speeches are definitely a lot easier to get up there to say something on what you already know about than to learn about something new to then have to relay to others.

All the best of luck with your presentation!

A famous unknown is Stanislav Petrov, a colonel in the Soviet Army, who averted a nuclear war between the Soviet Union and the United States on September 26, 1983.

Approximately 99.9999% of mathematicians are "famous unknowns." Just think about it . . . if you CAN come up with somebody, it's probably Ted Kaczinzky (the unabomber) or Albert Einstein, who was really a physicist, not a mathematician. Oh -- and that guy on "Good Will Hunting" - oh wait -- that's a fictional character. Ok -- so 1 1/2 famous unknown mathematicians. But there are so many more. . . .

Google Satchel Paige, one of Sports' most COLORful (pun acknowledged) characters of all time.
Satchel Paige is a truly great baseball legend; a pitcher who could make a batter feel good even getting struck-out.
I don't think you can go wrong with Satch as your 'famous unknown'.
