Hi

I have a toilet that keeps on running after its supposed to turn off. After the tank fils up, it overruns into the bowl and keeps on running for 10minutes or so before shutting off. I can take the cover off and pull up the lever connected to the float to shut it off. Its definitely worse in hotter weather than on colder days. I have called a plumber twice to fix it, but it works fine for a month or so before going bad. Do I need to replace the whole thing or is there any adjustment I can make to the float?

Thanks.

First, poppyman54 is right, but that's not all...

It's rare but not unheard of that your overflow tube (the white tube in the middle of the tank), is cracked and leaking water. It could also be the spud washer.

However, if you replace the whole thing with a new flushmate (the ones without the ball) it takes less then 15 minutes and your troubles will be over. The flushmates are easier to find then the old fashioned fillers, but if you find them (and they should be a little cheaper) you can replace the filler in about fifteen minutes.

But, I vote for what poppyman54 says, it sounds like a leaky ball, replace it, that takes five minutes.

Hope I helped.

How old is the toilet? If it is over 15 years old, replace it with a 1.6 gallon per flush toilet. you will save money in the long run, from using less water, and you won't need to call a plumber, to adjust a new toilet. If this is out of the question, check the float, it could have water in it, causing the float to stay down longer, from the added weight. The plastic floats can split at the seams, and take on water. Good luck!

Replace the fill-valve with a Fluidmaster 400A valve. This way you get rid of the ball and arm, have a quality valve and the installation instructions are great. Less than $10 at most Home Improvement stores.

for a quick fix if you have a ball in your tank grab the brass stem and bend it making the ball go down, this should make a quick fix , and turn the water off

It may be the seal on the bottom of the outlet, or it may be the float needs adjusting.

there is a screw on top of the flush valve to adjust the water level, or you can bend the rod slightly downward.
