Yes, Thomas Edward Lawrence did meet an untimely death six days after he flew over the handlebars of his motorcycle, since he faced death many times in the desert but always cheated it.
He wrote about his experiences in the desert in a book called: 'Revolt in the Desert' (1927) which was an abridged version of 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom', published in 1926, he also translated Homer's 'The Odyssey'.
The epic film 'Lawrence of Arabia', directed by David Lean and starring Peter O'Toole as Lawrence, told his story to millions more, and also won best picture for the year 1962.

Thomas Edward Lawrence, 'Lawrence of Arabia' (1888-1935) was a British officer who was assigned to train and help unite Arabian tribes during World War I. Arabia was part of the Ottoman Empire, and the British wanted to take advantage of Arabian nationalism in order to weaken the Turks.
