You would need to go to school and get a Bachelor's degree in Forensic Science, Criminalistics, or a natural science. You would then get the rest of your training from your employer. Firearms experts are in HIGH DEMAND so it is very likely you will get a job right out of school and get paid a lot too. But you may have to relocate, many of the jobs are down South. Look at the AAFS website for current job listings to see what the pay and requirements are where you are or might want to go.

Many universities are offering programs in forensics now. Some have 2 year degrees and others have 4 year degrees.
