My biggest fear is failing as a parent. I try very hard to be a good mother to my son, to not only love him and care for him but to teach him what he needs to know to be a good person as he gets older and it terrifies me to think that it may not be enough.

When I was born, my grandparent envied me. They extolled the wonders I would see and ease I would find. Yes, they had done their best. My parents saw deprivation and war, but they too believed, my generation would see uncounted wonders. And now, looking back, I see they were right. I have done things and seen things they never dreamed of in their wildest fantasies.

Now, I look upon my grandchildren and cringe. We have not done our best. Our grandparents and parents committed some grievous transgressions on nature. We now pay the price and our children and grandchildren will pay an even heavier price. I do not envy them and somehow, I feel it is my fault.

They will only know a life of deprivation, loss, and sacrifice. We learned early but acted too late. The world is about to change and there is nothing my generation can do to stop it. We can only try to moderate it. Winds will howl, seas shall rise and mountains fall as the world wreaks its deserved rage upon us. Aridity and chaos is to be their lot. I look upon my grandchildren and weep.
