I used to be "her" in highschool and through college. It lead to anorexia and an anxiety disorder. I think you're right about her thinking she has to earn her self worth, she's lost it-totally, and she's looking freaking EVERYWHERE for it.

I think that she may not realize how much she is worth and feels she needs to constantly prove that she can be right there in it with everyone.

Everyone has equal worth but when you put it to societal hierarchy, everyone has to earn their worth and place, not to mention defend it. In the end that type of thing doesn't matter and you can transcend that with the proper mindset.
