Some sports are no so violent. Baseball is not very violent and yet is a team sport. But the violent ones like football and boxing (being brain-less required)... violence is the truest evidence that non-intelligence exists... so I believe.

Sport have to do with intellect!!!! People who are good at sports have good coordination skills. That comes from an area of the brain that controls motor control. People who are good at sports are in general generally better academic performers than any other type of "nerdy" person. This is b/c their brain works very efficiently due to the conditioning. They are also better at concentrating than other people for obvious reasons. Less likely to commit crimes b/c their emotions are made plain on the field, etc. etc etc.!!!!!!!!!
I suppose that's b/c when you have professional athletes making 20mil a year for playing football, y would they want to do what Bill Gates does? Where's the benefit in that?

Here is an unusual angle regarding sports. I choose to maintain positive thoughts as much as I can because imo it is conducive to my joy. Sports imply competition and that implies a winner and a loser. I observe that losing is almost always a negative event (subjective I know). Therefore I avoid sports unless I can be sure that I will remain either positive or detached emotionally. If I am going to remain detached , I may as well stay away. Now that was an intellectual explanation. Is that a clue or not?

Because of the constraints of time. If you read about many Nobel scientists, they talk about the sacrifices they made to prove in the lab what they knew in their heads to be true. Some never found time to marry or pursue other interests because of looking for DNA or genetic mutation for 12 hours a day. On the other side, look at athletes. Many of them train several hours per day starting from very young ages to perfect their sports. That doesn't leave a lot of time for academics or intellectual pursuit. Since no one can create more time, we tend to specialize. If you are somehow trying to imply that a highly intellectual person wouldn't waste time on sports, then I disagree. Personally, it is my time in the gym that gives me the energy to study organic synthesis in the chem. lab. I would do more of both if time permitted.

My Harvard educated undergraduate advisor was a logician and philosophical genius --- and every one of his examples was from basketball or baseball.
I think most of us watch sports (and i am an *avid* sports fan myself) to NOT think too hard. So people who want to think hard all the time don't tend to watch sports.
I require a healthy balance of too much thinking and complete mindlessness.
I play golf to relax and contemplate my life (so not total mindlessness there)
I play ice hockey to work out and get a fairly safe thrill -- same with snowboarding.
I watch football so I can not think too hard and feel a comraderie with everyone in my hometown.
I avoid baseball because it puts me to sleep -- unless i'm at the game...
anyways -- I don't believe that super-intellectuals are not sports enthusiasts -- i've known quite a few. But i do agree that *most* intellectuals are not sports enthusiasts -- but usually only because they've pigeon-holed themselves into not being able to enjoy sports.

You are stating and extreme - "sports crazy"
I suggest Roger Starbauch. Navy Lieutenant, Star quarterback for Navy, Super Bowl quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, successful businessman and multimillionaire.
There are many sports figures that have gone on to fame and fortune in recent years. Most players are smart, degreed people who have an opinion.
Another one we can all remember - Ronald Reagan.
And how about Ross Perot - Navy officer, founder of EDS, billionaire and politician. One time owner of the Texas Rangers Baseball Team.
Or Mark Cuban - Internet entrepreneur, billionaire, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

i'm so with sophist. don't undercut the athletes though. football takes brains, the ability to read the field and judge a pass (trig and calculus based) or playing softball and being able to judge a fly ball, the break of a pitch when batting or where the ball is going to be before it even comes off the bat (again, math based) i know this beacuse i can do all the afore mentioned. i am also a full time college student in honors classes (keeeping above a 3.0) working three jobs and i gratuated in the top 3% of my class while taking honors and college level ap classes.

Because sports are mainly brawn. There is some thinking required but not a whole lot. There are no super intellectuals of sports because they have rammed their head into someone else soo many times, they damage their brain and lose brain cells.

People do things that interest them.
People dont do things that do not interest them.
The more you are interested about something the more time you will put into it.
Maybe Einstien was a fan of a particular soccor team, but that wasn't what he was known for. Why?because if it was i would have heard about the great soccor couch einstien who helped beat his home land in the soccor world cup in the 1930's(?)people learn in school about contributions made to our world by geniuses like Albert....soccor couchs add entertainment.can any at the top of there head tell me any great soccor couchs from the 1930's? if so then you have spent alot of time thinking and learning about soccor.further demonstrateing my point.

You woulld be amazed how bright a person needs to be to play sports. There are so many variables of what a player can do and it is like a very complicated game of chess..
If you are talking the fans, then there is a wide variety of intellects when it comes to fans
