and blacks vote overwhelmingly Democrat? What started this trend?

The real question is why do some cons keep lying about the answer?

It wasn't because of abortion or gay marriage. These weren't issues in 1948 when Strom Thurmond split from the national Democrat Party and created the States Rights Dixiecrat Party. And they weren't an issue in 1964, when the conservative South voted for conservative Republican Barry Goldwater for the first time. (Their confederate ancestors would be ashamed!)

It wasn't because of economics either. FDR was one of the most socialist presidents the United States ever had and yet he got his strongest support from the South. He created an alphabet of social programs (including social security) and had a tax rate of of 90% on the ultra wealthy. He even proposed a 100% tax on anything over 25k (300K in today's dollars).

THERE IS ONLY ONE ANSWER BUT THE GOP WON'T ADMIT IT UNTIL NOW!

GOP CHAIRMEN ADMITS THE GOP USED THE RACIST SOUTHERN STRATEGY TO WIN THE SOUTHERN WHITE VOTE FROM DEMS

GOP: 'We were wrong' to play racial politics

Mehlman's apology to the NAACP at the group's convention in Milwaukee marked the first time a top Republican Party leader has denounced the so-called Southern Strategy employed by Richard Nixon and other Republicans to peel away white voters in what was then the heavily Democratic South. Beginning in the mid-1960s, Republicans encouraged disaffected Southern white voters to vote Republican by blaming pro-civil rights Democrats for racial unrest and other racial problems.

TheOnlyBeldin,

In terms of social issues, Democrats have absolutely nothing to offer southern white conservatives.

In terms of economics, we have economic policies that work! Helping people help themselves has been proven to work time and time again.

Here are the percent increase in real GDP for various presidents:

FDR 177.51% (from 32' to 45')
FDR 88.14% (from 32' to 41', without WWII)
JFK/LBJ 46.00%
CLINTON 33.81%
REAGAN 30.63%
BUSH JR 16.55% (from 00' to 06')

Strontium,

You say its because of the "socialist policies" of the Democratic Party and yet no Democratic president was more socialist then FDR. AND YET the South absolutely loved him. He got his strongest support from the South.

Stop making excuses and own up it was because of racism and the civil rights movement.

Election map right here.

Viablere,

Apparently you stopped reading after the first line.

The typical white southerner absolutely loved FDR's BIG GOVERNMENT economic programs.

They left because of racial issues (in 1948 and 1964), not economic issues.

CHEVIK,

The "Southern Bloc" of Democrats that opposed the civil rights movement were CONSERVATIVES. Anyway you spin it, it was LIBERAL Democrats (like MLK and LBJ), LIBERAL northeastern Republicans (like Nelson Rockefeller from NY), and LIBERAL organizations (like the ACLU and NAACP) that fought for civil rights.

It was CONSERVATIVE Democrats (like Strom Thurmond and Jesse Helms)m, conservative Republicans (like Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan) and conservative organizations (like the Council of Conservative Citizens and National Review) who opposed them.

================
"Southern Bloc"
The name given to a group of ((CONSERVATIVE)) southern Democratic Senators, and one Republican Senator (John Tower of Texas), who opposed passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The southern bloc was led by Senator Richard Russell of Georgia.

Actually the south used to always vote Democrat. So much so that Democrats quit campaigning in the south.

It was called "the solid south" because they always voted Democrat. Even FDR boasted about it.

What blew it was when Humphrey said in an interview that they didn't have to worry about the south because they always voted Democrat. That made a lot of southerners angry.

So from that time on they rebelled and started voting Republican. That was the early 50's.

Also they got more educated and saw that big government and high taxes was not good for the working people.

The major civil rights advances won by blacks in this country were all won with strong GOP support. The Democrats have stolen their thunder with regard to the black vote through well orchestrated political propaganda unchallenged by the media.

Using socialist programs designed to perpetuate poverty and eliminate incentive Democrats have created an entitlement mindset among poor whites and poor blacks alike. This has all but manufactured a reliable vote for their handouts.

Why do Democrats consistently seek to personally destroy any black conservatives? They pursued Clarence Thomas with a vengence, that is certainly color blind right? Their treatment of him, Condi Rice, Michael Steele, that is respectable and racially sensative?

Check this out, Juan Williams of NPR is a liberal, but his treatment at the hands of Democrat spin meisters inspired this article "The Hard Facts of Black America
A journalist decried as a turncoat by community leaders defends his views on African Americans helping themselves.
By Juan Williams"

So what is the Democrat message to blacks? 'Dont srtay from our plantation and everything will be ok...'

Politics in the South changed after the civil rights movement. Democrats forced desegregation, which has brought loyalty from the black population, and disdain from the old white voters who changed their allegiance to Republican and started handing that down to their children in turn. I've heard more than one political analyst give the opinion that the trend may be reversing, not with blacks, but with Southern whites going back to the Democratic Party. Don't know if they are right, but it's possible.

Long winded, are you not? Simply put-the Republicans do not ALL vote any such way as you may think. They certainly do not vote for a woman or a black simply because the Democrats SAY it is time to vote for them. I am an independent voter and I have voted Republican now for over 20 years. As a rule of thumb, I find out who the New York Times and the majority of the liberal news media supports and HASTEN TO VOTE THE EXACT OPPOSITE.

one factor you are missing in your biased and ignorant analysis is that massive northern migration to the south has occured since the late 70's.

The democrat party turned itself into an urban party under the McCarthy revolution. Rural people had nowhere to go. It was not the targeting of southerners that led the southern democrats to defect, but instead the fact that they had nowhere else to go.

It was the democrats abandoning the southern rural person that led to the south turning red. Combined with the infusation of entrepenurarial, or carpet baggers, the south became more and more republican.

The south were always proud that they could stand on their own. That they didn't need BIG Government.

The Dem's started the entitlement trend of buying votes with other peoples assets.

Remember the entitled can't feel appreciation - after all they are entitled. It is funny the Liberals hate those born with a silver spoon in their mouth. They complain they have no ambition. They say they've stopped contributing to society. Their solution I love even more - they create the entitled. Now the "Rich" & the "Poor" don't contribute to society. At least the "Rich" families support themselves.

The social issues have divided traditional Southern Democrats from the modern Democratic party. I don't know what other Conservatives have told you, but that is the unvarnished truth.

As one former Democrat judge said: "Those Northeastern Liberals think they can come down here, take away our guns, take God away from us, and force gay marriage on us, they have another thing coming."

And you are just plain wrong. It was since Carter that the South has gone red. It has nothing to do with race. If more blacks are Democrats in the South, it has to do with the Liberal lie of caring more about them.

Because Southerners are patriotic and love America. They know that the Socialist policies of the Democrats are bad for the country. They are disgusted with the Anti-America, Anti-religion, Anti-Family, hate-spewing Liberals.

FDR was also the one who put thousands of Japanese Americans in prison during WWII. I guess that was different than Guantanamo huh?

If it wasn't for Republican Abraham Lincoln, the South would own slaves.

Keep up the race-baiting, bigot.
