I have a 79 Tbird with a 302 V8, Just rebuilt the carb tonight because I thought this was the problem.....Just installed engine a week ago also. When it starts, it idles really high and only runs when the choke is closed. Once you open the choke, it bogs down and dies...Any help would be great appreciated

1. Check that the distributor wasn't inadvertently installed 180 deg. out. DOUBLE CHECK

2. Look down the top of the carb. - Move the throttle shaft back, you should see a squirt of fuel. If fuel OK then check all your vacuum sources:

a) Your brake booster. Once the engine has shut down, remove the vacuum hose to the booster. Should hear air entering the booster. Check condition of hose.

b) The vacuum line to the transmission

c) The shift modulator on the transmission

d) Fuel charcoal filter canister mounted down beside the rad.

e) The vacuum reservoir (looks like an old 1 qt. juice can)

f) The remote vacuum mount on the firewall

g) Vacuum tree at rear of engine

You're describing a vacuum leak. You might have left a hose off that operates the solenoid that cracks the choke plate when the engine starts.

Methinks you are in need of a new vacuum. Bissel makes a nice one for under $100 with a Hepa air filter.
