How well you have to play? Well, I am more than 100% sure that there are quite a few better players than even the elite in the NBA out there, but they don't get selected. Why? Because they didn't have the luck, the resources, etc. But this isn't the case for everyone; life isn't any easier on the road for the NBA even if you do have the luck and resources. In fact, the chances of getting into the NBA are less than getting hit than lightning. But I'll get to the point. And that point is, you have to have the talent, athletecism, and diligence to make the NBA. Sometimes it's just the talent and athletecism; look at Vince Carter and LeBron James, two of some the greatest NBA players out there right now, and they acknowledged publicly that they don't put in any effort, they were just born with it. But then there's Michael Jordan, he couldn't make varsity but he worked hard. But he also had the athletecism, and although it took a little hard work, he always had the talent lying dormant inside of him. You know, I wish I could stand here and say that diligence and perseverence and passion are the only gifts you need to make the NBA, but I just can't. Sadly from personal experience, I know that there are just people born with the gift of basketball. There are just those people that don't have to work hard at it, they're just born with it. And there are those people that work their life out to be a somebody in basketball, and they just aren't. So is it fair that such lax and slacking people like LeBron James and Vince Carter be born with this gift and not someone else? No, it isn't. Does this knowledge make life even harder? Yeah, it does. Because countless peoples' dreams are crushed in the game of basketball, including mine. Countless dreams crushed by people who didn't even endeavor for the NBA! Just like me. Am I starting to make this sound really selfish and fatalist? Yeah, maybe I am. I typed this without even being really sure if you just wanted to know how well you have to play to make it all the way, or you dreamed of it. I don't know what the other responders said to this question, but when you face the facts, you have to be born with the gift. And that's the honest answer.

From what i can tell of NBA players today have 3 factors:
physically gifted- tall, 6ft+, athletic
talented- a good shot, basketball prowess, good ball control, defense
drive/passion- practicing the game, staying healthy, learning about the game, listening to coaches.
Those 3 are interchangeable, one can succeed by being physically gifted (YAO) and have less talent or by having a lot of talent and less physically gifted (Earl Boykins/ Mugsy) or having a lot of passion for the game (Ronny Turiaf).

It takes a lot of determination and passion to play the game of basketball, showing your ball handling, passing, rebounding and shooting skills. There are a lot of very talented kids out there who don't get selected in the NBA Draft though. It means that you have to be exceptional to be recognized.

It depends on your size, If your 5'5 like Earl Boykins, you have to be flawless, if your 7'6 like Shawn Bradly, you dont need as many skills......sad, but true...Just because your 7'6 a team will take a chance on you, and you could become an instant millionaire!
