Depends on where you live. In many part of the US they are illegal. Please research very carefully abot these fish before you buy one. Lots of aquarium keepers consider a snakehead to be the single biggest mistake they ever made in fish keeping. They are for the most part huge and need far more space than most people can afford, nasty attitudes which means no tank mates, prone to jumping which means a super thick and heavy lid and that only limits it to constant damage to the fish from hitting itself against the lid, expensive to feed as they often will only eat live food and for a fish that size doesn't mean feeder fish, it means large pricey fish like pond comets 6-8" long. They are not for the average aquarium keeper, that's for sure and in truth shouldn't be for any aquarium keeper, they just aren't aquarium fish.

Where To Buy Snakehead Fish

Two thumbs up for MM. These fish have been ban from many states due to their nature. There are certain types that are not true snakeheads. You need to check with your state to see if you can even have one. PA, WV, OH, NY, NJ & DE does NOT allow keeping of snakeheads by any means. We've had problems with these fish and are instructed to kill them whenever caught. Rewards have been offered just to go and fish for them.

MM is right, a "feeder" fish is a 6-8" fish.....of any kind.

They are basically illegal in the states now, there have been outbreaks of snakeheads in many lakes resulting in the lakes being poisoned to get rid of them.

you keep a snakehead in CA, you break the law.

weirdly, only a couple of snakeheads would survive in US waters for a long period, but because of these there's been a blanket ban on all species of snakeheads.

The snakehead fish is a vicious predator and is now illegal to import inmost states. They breed quickly and kill off all other species in their enironment. find another fish to buy.
