Some people say fishes do not need light in home aquariums, which is a wrong notion. They need as much light as in nature and to maintain a natural condition. The ideal 'photo period', or length of time the aquarium is lit, ranges from eight to twelve hours, depending on the tank. Generally ten hours a day is a good average for most aquariums.
If algae is a problem in the tank, a contributing factor is usually too much light. Reducing the artificial lighting time to eight hours, or a bit less if necessary, will help reduce the algae growth.
If there are live plants in the aquarium, the lighting should be increased. Plants require as much as twelve hours per day, however the time will depend on the aquarium setup and species of plants.
For fishtanks, its also not adviceable to have lights on after the fishes had their dinner..which means, you should try to maintain a natural cycle.

Minimum half an hour before and after you feed them. Too much light actually makes the water bad, so make sure the light is not to strong. You should do research, I did and it helped me alot with my fish and I know how to take better care of it.

all day, fish lights help promote color in fish when you look at them, fish are nocturnal so they will like the dark at night. but be careful, some fish will eat eachother in the dark because they are more active, at least my fish do...

Better to have them on during the day and early evening. The fish don't really need a light, so unless you have plants only have it on when you are there to see the tank.
