Does anyone know how the citizens of Nagasaki or Hiroshima who weren't killed survived?

Is there any kind of underground bunker that could protect someone?

You are thinking over 60 years ago. The A bomb is nothing compared to the nuclear ordinance that we have today. If there were nuclear war you can gaurantee that every nation that had weapons would also use them.

The US, Russia, Brittian, North Korea, France, the UK, India, Pakistan and others will fire their weapons. We alone in the US have over 2,000 actice nuclear warheads, on ground and around the world in nuclear subs and nuclear capable bombers.

There would be nuclear winter in which it is very likely no human would survive. If any landmasses survive at all.

there is not much that can be done to prepare for such a war.
there are many different kinds of nuclear weapons and they have different effects. Some will leave radiation in heavy doses for a long time and others will not.

Nearly all the damage to people in Japan with the two bombs was with in the first twenty minutes after the blast.

There are so many weapons out there now that an all out war would leave absolutely no safe place to be. Only safe for a short time but not long enough to prevent real damage to people.

some will survive to start the process all over again.

With every day pass, our country is getting into more and more trouble. The inflation, unemployment and falling value of dollar are the main concern for our Government but authorities are just sleeping, they don’t want to face the fact. Media is also involve in it, they are force to stop showing the real economic situation to the people. I start getting more concern about my future as well as my family after watching the response of our Government for the people that affected by hurricane Katrina.

According to recent studies made by World Bank, the coming crisis will be far worse than initially predicted. So if you're already preparing for the crisis (or haven't started yet) make sure you watch this video at http://www.familysurvival.tv and discover the 4 BIG issues you'll have to deal with when the crisis hits, and how to solve them fast (before the disaster strikes your town!) without spending $1,000s on overrated items and useless survival books.

They were far enough from the blast point to only suffer fatal radiation poisoning or other long-term disabilities, rather than dying immediately.

But with modern warheads being anywhere from 10 to 1000 times more powerful than those original two bombs, if you live anywhere near a point of detonation, survival is not an issue.

Plan on moving to a remote area far, far away from missile silos, big cities, and large water tables.

Bring plenty of supplies, say a decade or more, plus fertile seeds for planting and regrowing. Like a vegetable garden.

Also plan on getting some live stock that is young and can reproduce.

And, oh yes, buy guns and plenty of ammo to keep all of those refugees away from your place and out of your livestock and garden as they will overrun your place in shear desperation.

I remember the Cuban missile crisis. Everyone was talking about building fallout shelters. In fact, one of our neighbors (who had 8 little children) came to our house to ask my Dad to share the cost of a shelter both our families could use (I was one of 4 boys).

My Dad politely declined. After the neighbor left I heard my Dad mutter to himself. "I'd rather be dead."

The other folks who answered pretty much have it right. If there is a nuclear war, I'll have a drink or two on my deck and kiss ...my wife goodbye.

If the continental U.S. is hit several times, I wouldn't want to be in the aftermath. Because of my geographic location, I probably would survive and practice with my pistols quite often.

Be prepared, not scared.

Make sure you have plenty of canned food and gallon jugs of water. I recommend at least 2000 cans of food and about 200 gallons of water..minimum. A weapon you can use for protection. Yes underground would be nice, also you want to try and be upwind from the fall out. But that can be unpredictable. A tin foil hat might help to keep your hair from falling out...somebody here in the politics section is selling them to liberals I think....good luck and may the force be with you!

Take a deep breath, count to three. If you're still alive after doing that, you survived. For the moment.

Nope. Just bend over, grab your ankles, and kiss your *** good-bye. Because even if you survive the blast, and the initial radiation heat, the world will be hell on earth. So, why bother?
