It depends on what the question and answer is, I've seen some great answers that got a majority thumbs down cuz the status quo felt uncomfortable with it.

It depends. Several thumbs down can mean the answer is simply idiotic, but it could also mean that your idea is so original (and also intelligent) that the general (well, general Y!Answers) public does not agree.

Yes. Most people will give you a thumbs down if you have a strong opinion on an issue that disagrees with their own opinion.
