I find it annoying.. sometimes it's so bad you can't even make out what they're trying to say.. that's very annoying.

Yeah, I'm with you and the others, but I think Old Guy put his finger on a major reason--rebellion. Also, if you never really learned to spell or punctuate correctly, and you're not comfortable with Standard English grammar, either, then IM is a great shortcut. You can be cool, rebellious, and comfortable all at the same time.
I find "lol" especially odd. If the reader has to be told to laugh, then maybe the comment wasn't funny.

I feel annoyed when people spell words incorrectly, especially when they can't even speak proper grammer in the first place.

Very much so, and it is what keeps me from IM'ing myself. I would feel like a fool deliberately misspelling things which I am perfectly capable of spelling correctly!

First it's shorter, and it depends on the space you have, if using a cell phone and keys have three or more characters assigned to them, so it's easier to.

I rank it right up there with ,"let me axe you a question"
That one really irritates me
And the non-word "enthused". PEOPLE, IT IS ENTHUSIASTIC !!
