You can't make that statement.
Mutual funds have varying yields and differ dramatically. There are Mutual Funds that invest in Bonds, funds that invest in real estate, funds that invest in gold, oil, raw materials, growth stocks, utility stocks, conservative mix of stocks and aggressive mix of stocks.
As an investor that wants to get an adequate return but reduce risk you need to find investments that move during different parts of the economic cycle. For example, by investing in small cap funds, mid cap funds, large cap funds, real estate funds, international funds, and natural resource funds, plus having part of your money in more conservative capital appreciation funds, will give you good growth and stable investments. If you do your home work correctly, you can have great returns and still without much risk over a long period of time.
Go to Smartmoney.com and Yahoo Finance and start reading. Get some books on value investing. Don't look for the get rich quick schemes, but go for the long term. You can be worth millions at retirement but it is consistency and study that will do it.

There is no "best thing" to invest in. Only what's best for you. There is no answer for this question (for you) on this web site (or any other web site). Read a couple of books on investing for the long term. Understand "Asset Allocation", expenses, risk/reward, inflation etc.... and you'll be on your way to really making money.
