I think it's all a bit suspicious to me, i think Britain and America have been dying to get into Iran and this makes me think those soldiers were in Iranian waters and we're been fed this crap so we get behind our government for another unnecessary war with hidden agendas...

ok rant over now, sorry

They were operating under the auspices of the UN. So, technically, the Iranians took UN sailors. Given this, why wasn't the UN suitably outraged on its own behalf? Why did it need Britain to make a case to the 'Security Council'. Even then, the UN only sent a watered down complaint to the Iranians. This is so typical of this toothless tiger.

I think many posters are missing the point of your question, which I think is a slant on our involvement in the war in Iraq. Whether you agree with the war or not the fact is we are there and you should be offering our troops 110% support. So if they were in Iranian waters, then they shouldn't have been, however that is no longer the issue.
And Peterson your a low life, and its a good job not every ones a cowardly little sh*t like you or where would we be.

The Naval group were engaged in routine anti-smuggling patrols under a UN Security Council mandate at the time, operating with the authorisation of Baghdad.

From what I have read, they are assigned to stop and search ships that may be smuggling weapons into Iraq. According to the reports, they had just finished searching a ship when the Iranian's, in what today's reports said was a pre-planned action, surrounded and captured them.

That person is making an assumption of which waters the sailors were actually in.

So, far, we don't have any hard objective proof (camera shots, neutral GPS readings, etc.) We only have the word of two of the captured British troops who say they were in Iranian waters.

That may or may not be true, but there's no other evidence yet.

They were checking ships entering in to Iraq... looking for smuggled contraband. Specifically they were looking for stolen motor vehicles I believe. However I have my doubts whether that is true... who wants to drive around in Iraq anyway.
