every time they finish in the #1 spot they always lose in the first round. You do wish they would finish in the 4 spot?

Yes, I hope the Wings do NOT win the President's trophy.

It's a curse!!

I would rather they start the playoffs as the 4th seed and go from there.

Go Wings!

The hot goaltender usually wins the playoff round, and right now I believe the 2 hottest goaltenders in the West to be playing for Anaheim and Calgary.

The Red Wings' best chance is to hold onto the #1 seed and hope Calgary can leap past Minnesota to knock the Wild down to the #8 seed (only 2 points separate the Flames and the Wild, and the Flames still have 4 games while the Wild still have 3 games).

That being said, they can still get out of the first round by dropping to the #4 seed, but if that happens, they better hope Dallas can hold off San Jose for the #5 seed (again, 2 points separate the teams in question, and this time, both teams involved have 4 games).

I hope so. Get real, how easy of a division do the Red Wings play in? They play 24 games every year against three teams that have not seen the playoffs or winning record in years. Columbus, Chicago, and St. Louis are terrible! Detroit is overrated and plays in the weakest division in the league! They get to the playoffs and play good teams and prove they are not that good by losing in the first round. They may get to the second round, or they may lose to Calgary if they play the 8th team again! Do not believe Detroit will make it to the Cup. SABRES IN 07 ALL THE WAY!

If they end up with the #1 seed, they'll get Cal-gary. That's not good for the Wings.

The #4 seed sound better because the Stars haven't had much luck against Detroit when the Wings haven't overly fatigued on the back end of a back-to-back, but that 5 seed could very easily go to San Jose, and the Sharks have just owned Detroit lately, especially at the Pavilion.

Eh... I'll take my chances with the Flames.

They either seem to win it all OR go out in the 1st round it seems. I would also add that while they have Hasek (depending on which Hasek shows up), they suffered bigger losses with Yzerman and Shanahan. Also, a couple of pretty serious injuries on D over the last week can't help their depth there. Also, they don't seem to be too tough or physical for the post-season. Also, their top 2 forwards have a knack for disappearing (or getting shut down if it makes you feel better to put it that way) come play-off time. I am talking about Datsyuk and Zetterberg BTW.
Also 4th could play Dallas and 8th could play Calgary. I think they would be better off vs. Dallas so your point has credibility. Also, the President's trophy winner doesn't win the cup very much.

Last year they ran into the buzzsaw called the Oilers who went through the entire west from the 8th seed with a hot goaler. The time before that they ran into the Ducks and J.S. Giguere who again trampled the rest of the west on their way to a Cup series. Hockey playoff series usually are decided by who has the hottest goalie and solid D, last year the Wings put their faith in Legace and he wasnt the answer. If Hasek doesnt get hurt the Wings will be fine this post season....they finally have molded a team in the style of the coaching staff (looks eerily similar to the rugged Ducks squad that eliminated them). Their forechecking game is better than it has been in several years and the added toughness of Bertuzzi, Calder and Franzen will clear room on the ice for the skills of Datsyuk and Zetterberg to shine (something that they didnt have last season....the team had no toughness to clear room and the Oilers just overwhelmed the skill guys). As deep as the west is and the amount of tremendous goalies makes it tough for every team but the Wings have very good balance and a proven goaler so they have as good a shot as anyone. I am most leery of the Ducks, we know that Giguere can get stupid hot and he has Pronger, Neidermayer and a strong supporting cast in front of him and also the Flames (Kipper is as good as they come and this team is built for tough playoff series...scoring will be their problem), Canucks (Loungo is the best goaler in the west hands down this season but depth isnt there) with the Preds and Sharks being big threats but each has unproven playoff goaltending (not sold on Vokoun/Mason holding up in a tough playoff series and the Toskala/Nabokov tandem again have limited playoff experience). They have the 3rd best home record in the NHL so I am rooting for them to finish ahead of Nashville and capture the #1 seed in the west....no matter what they will have their work cut out for them, the west is loaded 1 through 8.

Well if the Red Wings finish 1st i think they have a chance of losing. They will probably end up playing Calgary who is starting to come into form. Kiprusoff played 2 great games against a hot Minnesota team.

It's completely up in the air. I hope they don't blow it again, but I won't be shocked if they do. All I know is that I've been saying "next year" for the last 5 years (well, minus the lockout) with confidence. My confidence is shrinking with trades and retired players. Soon, all of their veterans will run dry and they're going to have to jump into the rebuilding stages. I just want them to pull out one more cup before then. PS. How did I know that "lidstromnumber1fan" was going to beat me to this question?

Yup, because they were too old and slow last year.

This year they are a year older and a year slower.

For a world class organization, it seems that it's been a long time where no-one in the Red Wings front office has figured this out.
