The middle classes think so.

Paul Fussell wrote an interesting book on the American Class system several years ago called CLASS. He asked people what distinguishes Class in the United States. He got different answers from different groups. The main answers he got were:

1. The people in the lower classes said that money separated the classes.

2. The people in the middle classes denied that the US has social classes -- but when pressed, said that education separated the classes.

3. The upper classes said that tastes separated the social classes.

I suspect most people who think education isn't important don't have very much of it.

There's several different ways to get an education. You don't need a business degree to manage a McDonald's, but you do need pretty much the same knowledge gained by experience.

There are some professions that the education is required. I doubt there are many places hiring teachers without degrees in something, and I don't know of any state that allows people without degrees to become doctors or lawyers.

Education gives you more choices. It plays a very big part in our society.

That part, by the way, is anything but as an equalizer. If the goal is for everyone to be equal, the only means is to make everyone equally ignorant and confused.

Look at countries who don't have good educational systems and compare that to the nation's productivity. Education = productivity.
