It helps a whole lot to know where you live, and even if we knew, it's hard to tell from that description. About how big was it? Where did you see it?

If it was a wild snake, I've said it before, I'll say it again, your best bet is to get a field guide to your local snakes, this way, if you're out somewhere and see a snake (and you have your field guide with you, which you should if you find yourself in areas where you find snakes that you don't know what they are) you can simply look it up, and know for sure what it is without having to wait until you can get online and give a hazy description... I'm still waiting to see the following question happen....

I was bitten by a red black and yellow banded snake, what was it?

Of course by the time this hypothetical person would be able to post the question, they would know.

It is increadably difficult to say from that discription, location, size, was is found near water, things that like help. If you are in the US then I am going to guess it is a kingsnake but it is really hard to tell.
