Laws should be based on morals. Where laws are counter to morals I go with morals. I've never had an instance where I had to break a law in order to stick to my morals.

Both are important but morals first because it eliminates so much of the negative and bad behavior. Laws are still needed for everything from traffic speed on roads to what constitutes pre-meditated murder.
Basic laws control day-to-day chaos and keep order to a functioning society. There would still be a need to have guidelines, rules of engagement, and those penalties for those who do forget their morals.

Laws are are more important.
Morals vary between cultures, sub-cultures, localities, people, races and religions.
In a perfect world laws apply to everyone, equally, regardless of their morals.
Makes it easier that way, don't you think?

If you live your life and believe in goodness and morality then of course you'd have a mutual respect for laws .

Both are important. But they are entirely unrelated.
Or at least, they should be.
Morality is based on religion and culture. So, what is immoral in one religion may be highly praised in another.
Laws are what society chooses to enact, theoretically to protect everyone equally. But laws should be based on rational and objective standards, not religious dogma.
Legislating morality is effectively imposing one set of religious beliefs on everyone. Against their will. Whether they believe in that religion or not. And to me, that's immoral.
