you can use what's called VHT high temp ceramic which can withstand 1200 degrees, or even Engine Enamel would hold up pretty well. I wouldn't do it though just because it'll look kind of crappy.

Your Muffler is gonna get Hot and will probably melt the paint off. If you do this ask a Professional what type of paint you need. Do Not use anything Flammable on your car, for Safety reasons.

You would need to use a real high temperature paint for it not to peel, and the pipe would have to be cleaned completly free of rust. There is no gain in doing this, and if the paint isn't treated for high temperatures, it will burn, flake, and smell bad until it burns off, or burns up. Might I ask why you would want to paint it? If its cosmetics, then there are better ways to go about it. like tips.

You'd get a little smoke when the paint burnt off in the first five minutes.

nothing, just use fire proof paint, if you use regular enamael or acyilic paints it will burn off and give off a smell of burning paint. go to any do it your self hardware store and ask for fire resistant paint.
