Sources other than their pensions, which are very high? This could prevent Bush/Cheney from receiving their massive kickbacks from the oil companies and Halliburton from their treasonous acts?

right now if an oil company tells Bush, "privatize iraq's oil fields and we'll pay you 50 million right now" it's illegal, but if they agree to pay AFTER BUSH LEAVES OFFICE, it's legal. This amazes me that we have such a loophole!

essentially you are saying that to be a president or vise president you have to give up any right to earn money above you pension for the rest of your life. think about it, you would only get people running for presidency who would be satisfied with a fixed income, or puppets set up by others. Since when did it become a crime to run for office.

What possible legal basis is there to prevent some private company from hiring an ex-public official?

If there was unethical or ollegal conduct by the public official during their time in office, that's grounds for separate legal actions.

But there is no rational way to prevent a private company from contracting or hiring a (now) private person.

Well "Sparky" first you need to indict and convict them to use the phrase "treasonous acts" and place punishments on them.

NEXT you'd have to change the law... and the wording of the Declaration of Independence: that little "Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness" phrase that means you can't prevent a citizen from WORKING.

Interesting that you don't include William Jefferson Clinton who sold secrets to the Chinese for campaign funding... AND who is paid VERY highly for each speaking engagement... HE was indicted, but not convicted.

Retired presidents now receive a pension based on the salary of the current administration's cabinet secretaries (Executive Level I), which is $183,500 as of 2007... which is rather LOW in the corporate-world.

What I'd REALLY like to see are changes in the laws that:
a) would proscribe a member of CONGRESS from becoming a lobbiest for a minimum of 4 years after the leave or are voted out of office.
b) would eliminate the pension of any member of CONGRESS who is convicted of graft, bribes or other ethics violations.

You'll probably need to change the constitution to effect your plan. In addition, you make a lot of assertions with no facts to back them up.
