The Native Americans did not deal in tarot cards until well after European influence. Tarot cards arguably originated in Italy, while the modern decks are heavily based on the work of Arthur Edward Wait and Aleister Crowley. While the cards you were considering are probably not indigenous NA magic, they could serve as a focus for NA-related spirit guides.
As for the ethical question of playing around with the cards - no, it's not bad. The cards themselves are just objects and are incapable of good or evil. Often, tarot cards are used for counselling and meditation as well as divination. Any good tarot reader will tell you that they are NOT foretelling the future. The cards illustrate a possible path based on the current actions and orientations of the querent. It is the reader's intuition that does the real legwork, not the cards.

1. Am sure tarot cards are not from your or any other NA culture, so I don't see why that form specifically would mean anything.
2. They are stiff printed paper, like other regular playing cards and post cards and I don't see anything happening with those.
It would have to take an actual belief that magic is real to even worry about this...
If anything, "Native American tarot cards" are, I'm sure, definitely part of the "new age" trend more then anything else...more then being real, more then having any ability to affect anything. For that matter in itself I don't know that I'd want anything to do with new age garbage if I were you, knowing how much new age loves to steal and distort bits and pieces of Native cultures.
P.S. I have a set of cards I was given years ago that I've played with off and on over the years for the fun of it. Not a thing has ever happened. Not even any feelings of anything...they basically felt like messing around with any other playing cards. I'm an atheist even, so I don't even call up the whole "god" deal to "protect" me or anything...so I'd assume I'd be believed to be more vulnerable then...but not a thing has ever happened, they were of no more use then just being fun to pretend with, a bit of entertainment for a few minutes, basically just a toy.

Why would your mom ask the person who is trying to sell the cards whether or not its a good idea to buy them. No wonder he looked at her funny. Tard!
Its not bad to play around with native american tarot, enless you don't want to know your future, past and present.

I've had my Native American Tarot for a quarter century now and they have never caused any problems. I've found that the European methods and protocols does confuse the readings. However, I have learned many paths in the last 25 years and the deck and I now have a good relationship.
So we know we are speaking of the same deck, mine was created by Magda and J.A. Gonzalez.

Well I can only fathom (I wasn't there) that the clerks face was an expression doubting whether your serious or not , for example you keep saying "play" like its a game maybe the reason he was going into detail on how to use them was to show you that he doesn't think its a game . Just my guess tho .

Never heard of such a thing. We are not witches and warlocks, or gypsies. Us natives dont want to harm anyone, only to live in harmony. Most likely your "tarot cards" are just a joke of some sort.

No, they're just cards...pieces of paper. Get them and have fun with them. Don't let superstitions control your world.
