I am writing a paper on Hubert von Herkomers painting "our village nurse" . I need more information about nursing during that time era. Were nurses their own contractors? Did they get hired by the patients or did they work exclusively for doctors? How is it that there would be a village nurse? Any input is appreciated. I can't seem to find any resources answering these questions, if you know of one, please let me know. Thanks

Go online or at a larger library and look for the 1911 Encyclopaedia Britannica, which is famous for long articles and is now in the public domain. The article on nursing and related articles, like public health, should offer you a bunch of details.
This is the complete article
http://www.1911encyclopedia.org/Nursing and others are available. [found later while researching another topic]
http://encyclopedia.jrank.org/ please note that this site constantly shifts from the 1911 to shorter articles from another one,
and
