several hundred. he was very prolific and created many, many pieces. if you are looking for Beethoven symphonies, there are only nine though. keep in mind though that there are many more types of musical pieces besides symphonies. there are also most likely many pieces that have been lost, forgotten, or have yet to be discovered.

Beethoven did nine, Mozart like 50, and some other very famous classical musician 100. These are the most famous classical musicians of all time

We'll probably never know.... how many original compositions wound up in a single copy, lost or trashed??

Besides this, many ended up in the trash. He was a perfectionist.
