You should know when to give up when everything and everyone is out of your control. If you are no longer in control of the situation, then that is a good sign to give up. Or when you feel there is nothing more you can do or say to change the situation. I always refer to the serinity prayer when I ask myself that question.

if you're a believer in the power of prayer, you never give up...you continue to help the person from a distance because you knowingly have done all you can in the physical sense. additionally, we need to me mindful that a person will only seek and accept help when they realize within themselves help is needed.
