Are they better than they were? His last one w/o video (about 3 years ago) just died and no one would or could do anything about it. No he didn't drop it. So are the new ones better?

Okay, first of all, all iPods and iPod clones that have internal batteries will die due to age. It's just one of the handful of drawbacks of using Lithium-Ion batteries, which begin to corrode internally from the moment of manufacture. There are sources for replacement batteries out there (yes, even the "unopenable" iPod can be opened up for battery replacement), both full-service (Apple) or self-service (pretty much every other source).

Second, two things that every iPod Video owner should have ready to go from the very start are a screen protector (they're physically durable, but the acrylic screens do tend to show off their scratches) and either a case or a sleeve (either one will work, depending on preferences, but you should assume that it _will_ get dropped at some point).

Third, yes, they're much improved. Not only can they now play video (you can even pump the feed directly to a standard TV set with the right cable), but they have longer battery life, much more hard-drive capacity, several new software-based features, and they've had a few more years to improve upon the internal components.

I'd get him a Zune.
iPod only allows a user to upload music they buy or music they steal. If it weren't for illegal sites such as Limewire, iPods wouldn't be as popular.
Zune offers unlimited downloads for only $15 per month. A service Apple has said it will not even consider. So for the price of a CD, you can give your son the ability to practically get an unlimited amount of songs, or have him buy/steal music to listen to.

Zune also offers a bigger screen (free videos are coming soon). Live radio, wireless sharing, the ability to change background images so no two Zunes are the same, and did I mention the service?

Go to http://www.zune.net to find out more.

Yes get him one, they are fantastic. Get an Agent 18 case for it as well, they scratch easy. I got my 18 year old and 13 year old sons one each for Christmas and haven't seen them since.

yea they are... but i prefer the zune i had both and the zune has a bigger screen and ur able to send files to ur friends wirelessly. but the ipod isn't bad either... and yeah new one tends to develop some problems.. like if it runs out of battery or freezes but maybe its just bad luck i have.

good luck.
