It depends upon how much of the rotator cuff is torn as to how long it will take to heal. Up to a 25% tear, it will generally heal in 2-3 months on average. A larger tear will take longer, but may only respond to surgery. If you are a diabetic or have problems healing, it will take a third to a half longer than average.

My approach is to decrease the pain and support the area initially. This I achieve through using laser therapy, needle-less acupuncture and Kinesio tape. Not all therapist use these techniques - only the good ones!! This can take around 2-3 visits on average. I make sure that your range of movement is maintained so you don't get the shoulder stiff, but without putting stress on the area. Yes - it is possible to either tear it further or strain something else close by. So you do need to be as careful as you can and follow the advice of your therapist.

I generally start to add strengthening exercises in a very controlled way, seeing what you can tolerate and proceed accordingly. As a general rule of thumb, the exercises should not be increasing the level of pain past a 6/10. If it is, then you have a greater chance of injuring the area further.

I hope this helps and gives you some insights. Don't forget to use ice at home if it does get sore - but only put the ice on for about 10-15 minutes at the most.

Good luck!

I tore my rotary tor cuff while swinging a bowling ball. I went to physical therapy, and yes! It helped!.....but you have to give it time. Yes! You are adding insult to injury by using the arm before it is completely healed. You could make the injury worse. Baby the arm, but be sure and do the exercises that the therapist gives you. It will get better, I promise.
