While there doesn't seem to be a consensus on "why", both male and female giraffes have 2 hair covered horns on their heads, called ossicones. Male giraffes will use these to playfully fight other male giraffes when growing up. One possible "why" is the giraffes close genetic relation to the Okapi, another horned mammal.

Giraffes are closely related to the many antelopes. The standard pattern for antelopes is two horns. There was obviously no evolutionary reason to get rid of them, perhaps they are useful in defence.
