I've traveled around a lot, but have lived in New York the majority of my life, but currently in Florida. I will be in San Diego and LA next month, so I'll see how the west coast lives. But I have to say, out of all the places I've lived and visited, New York is still the coolest place to live. Perhaps I'm biased because I was born there, but New Yorkers are as real and down to earth as anyone can be. And it's true the richest, most affluent people in the country live in New York, perhaps they also have a pad in LA or elsewhere, but the top hedge fund managers, and investment bankers live in the city. It's definately a cool place!

West Virginia. Now before anyone starts with the inbred jokes just hear me out. For starters, its population is one of the lowest in the country. Per cap. crime is one of the lowest in the counrty. Urban sprawl? whats that? This place has everything but ocean front. Hell, I can't stand the sand anyway and i'm afraid of things that can eat me. Anyway, where i'm from is a little town called Fayetteville, WV. It was rated as one of the top 10 coolest towns in the country(budget travel) also one of the top 10 boater towns in the country(paddler mag) Outside wrote that its a must come check out. You ask why? We've got the world's best whitewater, the climbing is some of the best in the world and the mountain biking oppurtunities are endless. There are 2 state parks within a 15 to 20 mile radius and there is the New River Gorge National River (70,000+ acres) and the Gauley River National Recreation Area. Now that's just in one little area.
We also have skiing, hiking, camping, fishing, and hunting. Throw in an additional million and half acres of national forrests and state parks and you can go enjoy yourself anywhere in the state.
Oh, did I mention WVU.
Now the one thing we don't have is a big city. But that isn't a bad thing. Every once in awhile you have to leave behind the clean mountain living and head to the concrete jungle and get you're culture shock, and that's fine. But knowing you get to come home to the nicest people in the world(i still leave my home unlocked) and leave behind the hustle and bustle, well that's priceless.
Now i've been fortunate. I've got to travel all over this beautiful country. Lived in Colorado and Utah. Spent a winter in South America. But I just don't think to many places hold a candle to West "by god" Virginia.
Now, everyone can start with the WV jokes.Ha! Ha!

Depends how you look at the world. New York is a terrific city, sure, but I don't know if it's necessarily the best state overall. As much as it pains me to admit it, given the crowds, I think California is probably the most interesting state in terms of pure scenery and interests. It's the same with Illinois and Chicago. Chicago's a terrific city all around. But Illinois is a rather uninteresting state in terms of scenery.

Hawaii. that's the only island plus that's relatively perfect! attracts many ppl and in spite of the fact that it has the full energetic volcano element that's nevertheless a great spot to bypass to and/or stay

My dad lives in L.A and it is awful. There is so much crime, racism, hatred, and superficiality there. The weather is awful too.
