Lutherans ARE Protestants. When Martin Luther nailed his famous proclaimation to do church door, he was PROTESTING the pope and the catholic church... and that is were the name "Protestant" came from as it is a Noun, and a Verb

martin luther was a monk from germany who studied under the Catholic religion. However, Catholic leaders started to sell indulgences. indulgences are like paying money to the church to have a direct pass to go to heaven after death regardless of what sins you committed. Luther believed that one could only go to heaven through faith in God instead of paying money. As a result, Luther publicly opposed the Catholic Church and was against the selling of indulgences. Luther gained many followers and was exiled by the Pope.

Protestants started during the Reformation in Europe. Protestants are branched out from major religions, either Christianity or Catholicism.

Hence, Lutherans are similar to the Protestant because they both oppose and believe differently from "parent" religions

Martin Luther also translated the complex-worded Bible into a much simpler form so commoners could read and understand the Bible. Hopefully, commoners would discover that buying indulgences weren't neccessary

Lutherans are Protestants. Martin Luther was a catholic priest who left the church because he didn't agree with their way of worship. He put the Bible into the hands of parishioners for the first time. Only the priest had Bibles at that time. For more information read about Martin Luther in your encyclopedia.

Lutherans were the first and by definition true Protestants.

If the definition of a Protestant, or perhaps by stating the root word, we see that it is protest. It was Martin Luther and his followers who protested against the abuses of the Roman Catholic Church, most especially against the selling of indulgences (forgiveness in heaven).

It is interesting to note the reason the Roman Catholic Church was selling indulgences was to raise money to build the new St. Peter's in Rome, the one that we see today, and the reason it was able to happen, the selling of indulgences, was because of Gutenberg and his press. The RC Church was able to mass produce the indulgence-forms and then send out emissaries to sell them.

Also, on a side note, the dates of Martin Luther, birth and death, are almost identical to King Henry VIII. Isn't it wonderful when you can stick several items of history together at the same time (you can throw Columbus and his voyages to the New World at the beginning of this period as well).
