All I can guess is that he is asking for a word problem that would represent the net ionic equation for all neutralization equations.

For example, in standard form the equation would be: (H+) + (OH-) → H2O

However, for a word problem, you would replace the symbols (H+, OH- and H2O) with the chemicals they actually represent.

Hope this helps!

First you need to know what the net ionic reaction is for neutralization.

Then you need to determine what molecules those ions come from and give a name for those compounds.

I think you'll find that the following is a good place to start.

You have to balance the reactions so that the positives and negatives neutralize each other (ie; you are left with a net charge of 0).

The overall equationis H+ (aq) + OH- --------> H2O (l)

e.g. Na+ (aq) + OH- (aq) + H+ aq) + Cl- (aq) -------> Na+ (aq) + Cl- (aq) + H2O (l)

the ions involved in the reaction are those that changed states: H+ (aq) and OH- (aq) to H2O (l)
