I suppose the magazines are to take your mind off your troubles, but if you're anything like me, you just leaf through them aimlessly without really reading them.

I really don't know why emergency rooms don't have them. All ours has is a bunch of Guideposts and Watchtowers. Like that's really something I want to look through while I'm waiting for my kid to be stitched up.

Last time I went through an emergency room I was tied to a back board. A magazine would have been really nice right then (although some of them might be in poor taste, would you really want to be sitting in the ER and see a copy of LIFE?)

EDIT:
To help you while away the time:
A guy walks into a psychologist's office and says "Doc you gotta help me. One night I dream I'm a tee-pee. Then I dream I'm a wigwam. Then I'm a tee-pee again. What's going on with me?"
The doctor says "Obviously your two tents."

A grasshopper walks into a bar. The bartender says "Hey, you know we have a drink named after you?"
The grasshopper says "You have a drink name Marvin?"

Doctors are in a competitive field, trying to keep your business. Emergency rooms are pretty much guaranteed to have patients with or without frills.

Doctors want you to be calm and relaxed. In the emergency room situation, it's already known that you're in some kind of dire need, otherwise you wouldn't be there....so there's no need to keep you calm and occupied.

Why would a doctor's office have an ER?

The doctors there don't have the time to get the subscriptions

Good question, considering you'll probably be waiting longer at the ER.
