does minimum wage apply to all bussinesses? i told my dad i was trying to get a job at dairy queen and he said i probably wouldn't get minimum wage. i said that the reason they have minimum wage is that it is the least they can pay you.

and what is the new minimum wage anyway? i know it was 5.15 but they changed it.

and when does the new minimum wage go into effect?

Minimum wage is the same for any and every business operating legally. I think the minimum wage is now $7.25.

Some businesses, those with a very small number of employees, and some specific jobs are exempt from the minimum wage laws. The Dairy Queen might fall into that category.

The only exception I know of is for employees who make commission or can expect to make tips--they can be paid less than the minimum wage so long as their total compensation exceeds minimum wage. Since you don't generally tip at fast food restaurants I'd expect that they'd have to pay minimum wage.

Also I'm not sure when the wage hike goes into effect--you can probably google it and find out though.

'Youth Minimum Wage Program

A minimum wage of not less than $4.25 may be paid to employees under the age of 20 for their first 90 consecutive calendar days of employment with any employer as long as their work does not displace other workers. After 90 consecutive days of employment, or when the worker reaches age 20 (whichever comes first), the worker must receive the minimum wage of $5.15 per hour."

definitey they don't have to pay min wage if you are supposed to get tips. because they assume the tips will make up to the minimum wage. there may be other exceptions that i don't know about-like for hiring students or stuff - but i don't know.
