The size of the hole is smaller for 0-3 so the flow doesn't overwhelm the baby who is learning to coordinate his suck/swallow reflex.

Pacifiers: The silicone part baby sucks on is smaller for the 0-3 and larger for the 3-6, larger still for 6-18 etc.

Nipples: They're not really according to age, per say. Size 1 nipples have the smallest holes so that a fast flow doesn't choke a newborn. Size 2 nipples have a larger hole so an older baby can suck out more, faster. According to a bunch of stuff I've read, you don't need to move up to Size 2 nipples, although I have some and prefer them now as it takes my son half the time to finish a bottle with a size 2 on it. Plus, I think it helped get him ready for the fast flow of a sippy cup or regular glass.

as the baby gets older the size and flow of the nipple on the bottle varies....when they are aged 0-3 mths the flow is ver slow to accomodate the babies sucking reflex and when they are 3-6 the babies appetite increases as well as the sucking force once they reach 6-9 mths the flow will be either med flow or fast flow....atleast for my chubby monkey any way! hope this helped

It's just the size of the nipple. It has everything to do with how big the baby's mouth is during those months. It doesn't have anything to do with the hole. The hole only controls the flow. Every size has a slow, medium, and fast flow.

i have no experience with pacifiers, but the bottle nipples are different due to flow rates. the older the child gets, the faster flow nipples are required, or they'll have trouble drinking their formula, milk, etc. turn the bottle upside down and you'll see what i mean.
