4(x + 2) – 3x = x – 6

Distribute the left

4x+8-3x=x-6

simplify by adding like terms on the left

x+8=x-6

Now we know there is no solution because how can you add 8 to a number, then subtract 6 from the same number and end up with the same thing? If you still can't see this, we'll keep going until we get to a false statement. Subtract x form both sides

8=-6

Now we have gotten to a false statement which means that there is no solution to the equation

4x+8-3x=x-6
x+8=x-6
x-x+8=x-x-6
8=-6 cannot be done therefore the problem is not solvable.
