I had sharp pains in my back and legs caused by sciatica during all my three pregnancies. My midwife said it is common for this condition to be aggravated during pregnancy because of the uterus expanding and pushing on nerves.

There are some positions that might help relieve this if it is sciatica. You can sit perfectly upright with one foot on the floor and the other leg bent and resting on your knee. Staying straight, push down on the knee of the leg that's bent. This relieves pressure on the sciatic nerve. You would do this to the side that is bothering you - or both sides. A good and experienced chiropractor can also help tremendously with sciatica.

The pain in the side of your stomach (if it comes and goes) is due to stretching ligaments. There are several ligaments attached to the outside of your uterus and these are stretched A LOT as you grow. I had these pains throughout all my pregnancies. They sort of felt like a really painful "side ache" or a cramp you get after drinking water and running.

The ligament pain is harder to relieve because you can't stop your uterus from growing! So the only thing to do is maybe hold something warm there and massage in circles or change positions.

If it's a different type of pain then this...or if it's constant then please give your doc a call about it.

Best of luck to you

I remember having sharp pains early on in my second pregnancy that turned out to be sciatica (nerve) and ligament pains. However, five weeks is a long time to wait and anytime you are having unusual pain during pregnancy is a time that your doctor is going to want to hear from you sooner than later. It will be reassuring to see the baby's heartbeat and know that everything is okay. And you can ask your doctor for a recommendation to a chiropractor. Chiropractic really helped my pain and it is safe for pregnant women when done by a chiropractor who has experience with this. Best of luck with your pregnancy.

I don't know what to tell you about the sharp pains, other than you should contact your OB. It could be your uterus stretching. I've had Braxton Hicks, and they've been uncomfortable, but not painful. As far as the charley horse, I had one of those too. Very painful. I ended up going to a prenatal massage therapist and she spent 45 minutes just massaging my leg. It really loosened the muscle, and within 2 days all the pain was gone. So that's something to think about.

I agree with the others. It's most likely nerve and ligament pain. I had the ligament pain with my first pregnancy, but not the others.
You need to call your doctor and report your symptoms to see if he/she wants to see you earlier than your next appointment and for some advice with pain relief.

I have to agree with one of the other answerers, it's probably sciatica and ligament pains! I had thosethe worst with my last pregnancy. Hate to tell you this but it gets worse the further along you get. Just so you can be prepared if that is what it is.
