Even those stupid moments in your life, they happen for a reason?

No. We wish things happened for a reason---but they just happen.

It seems to me the people who are saying "Yes, so we can grow and learn from them" aren't answering the question. Are they saying that things happen to us--good or bad--solely so we can build character? So, there was a reason the other driver hit my car---so that he would look both ways the next time? That makes no sense. How does that validate the act of hitting my car? He could have known to look more carefuly without actually hitting me.

As the saying goes: S**t happens

It just happens. Don't try to analyze it

Yes. I think a simple direct answer like that wouldn't satisfy you. I'll try to explain.

Contemplate the following statement :-

"without reason, there would be no activity, and, without activity, there would be no reason."

Now, here is your answer:

You had a reason to ask this question don't you? You wanted an answer (reason). It triggered you to post this question here (activity). Can you see, how your question have happened (appeared) here for a reason?

Yes, even those stupid moments in our life, happens for a reason and in fact, we and others have collectively created it. Our actions and reactions to our Time, Space, & Circumstances have created it. If we happened to react differently, different things might have happened.

If you understand the law of cause and effect, you will understand your question better. Actually, you don't have to confuse yourself with philosophical thoughts. Philosophies are all hypothetical. All you need is observation. Observe the activities around you.

Look at the morning glory, see how it blooms and gladly look forward to the sun light.... look at the glad dog that comes to greet you when you return home, look at the babe that smiles at you when you pamper it, look at the stars that shines over the sky... there is a reason... and there is a reason for it to be there... everything happens for a purpose....

Life have a purpose.... and our life's purpose happen to be to learn to receive and give God's love... and life is beautiful... love your life and live it to the fullest.

Logically, I think the answer is yes. The ultimate question has to do with what level of reason you are getting at. I can get up from my chair and walk to the sink for a glass of water for the very simple reason that I'm thirsty.

What's the reason for the slaughter of 6 million Jews and sundry undesirables in Europe in the 30s and 40s? On one level, the reason is only that certain powerful people ordered it.

I think your question is really about discovering some kind of motive or purpose for certain events.

Why did so many unfortunate people die in a massive tsunami just over a year ago?

I don't know why. I really don't. I believe that what is important for me lies in my reaction. Ultimately, I may be powerless to affect most events, but that won't stop me from offering what assistance I can to people who need it.

To believe in a pre-ordained reason, fate or destiny to explain why things happen is appealing to ignorance....something our primitive barbarian ancestors used to explain the unkown. Unfortunately, objective reality looks at the world in a different light:

1. Biology adequately describes life and emotions without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

2. Astronomy adequately describes the formation of stars/planets/universe/etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

3. Geology adequately describes the evolution of the Earth, land formations, etc without appealing to mystical invisible dieties

4. Psychology describes the human psyche better than appealing to mystical invisible dieties

5. Appealing to mystical invisible dieties is an appeal to ignorance

6. There's no physical evidence for the existence of mystical invisible dieties or that things happen for a reason other than that explained by science.

Everything happens for a reason, but some things have more meaning than others.

One needs to have the wisdom to determine if something has great meaning or little meaning. Sometimes we don't find out until it is too late.

Things just happen. We are the ones who associate it with reason.

When something happens, consequences are inevitable. You can't have anything happening without absolutely no consequences. Hence, things happen for a reason is a very mundane statement. There is nothing spiritual or philosophical about it.

everything arises spontaneously of its own. All the inferred qualities of experience happen for a reason though.

A rock tumbling down a hill means nothing by itself. When the event encounters awareness though, it becomes significant.

...as such, radical subjectivity seems to be the underlying 'reason' for everything, if one is inclined to say that everything happens for a reason.

Yes, but unfortunately, the reason may not be within the reach of our logical minds all the time, unless, we evolve into a level of perception beyond just the sensory levels !
