I am incredibly fair skinned. I start off with 5 minutes a session, then after three or so of those, I go to 10, then 15 then 20. If you are darker complected, you can start off with longer periods in the bed. I think the fastest way to get a tan is to get one sprayed on. In a bed, take your time, use the lotions they sell and do NOT burn yourself. Once your base tan is set, you can go for longer periods of time. Just don't use it too often or you will look like this girl I knew once.. she was practically orange and always shiny!

Weeeeeell, that depends on how fast you tan anyway. Here's an example.

I'm half Eastern Band Cherokee, half Irish. My base color is the same as Cover Girl Soft Honey, to give you an idea of my skin tone. It's a Fitzpatrick Type IV, always tans to a nice brown and only burns if I've taken some medicine that makes me photosensitive(life lesson: don't take Benadryl then go outside for a whole day.) I haven't ever had a sunburn in the way most full Caucasian people do. As a result, when I start tanning, I go for 15 minutes the first time, wait two days and then go 20. It takes me two sessions to get a good moderate brown. I just used the first of 5 sessions I had left that I paid for over a year ago because it only takes me two, and I don't lose the color.

As for Mom, she's full Irish, Cover Girl Creamy Natural, a Type I (almost always burns.) She can tan after burning, but rarely. She starts at 5 minutes and works her way up to 20 over the course of three weeks. That's how different even individuals in the same family can be. Make sure you know how YOU react first.

One reminder: if you're darker skinned, you have less of a chance of turning orange in a tanning bed. There are 2 types of melanin, pheomelanin (a red compound that gives redheads their hair color and light complexion) and eumelanin (which folks like me have, the brown kind.) The former turns lighter people that odd orangey hue.
