There was a huge population of Americans who had settled there. They did not trust Santa Anna to live up to his part of the surrender agreement. Most people thought they would be better off joining the United States. This would afford protection from Mexico trying to reclaim Texas.

We seem to have always thought that if we want something, take it. Might is right. We also stole Hawaii, just went into a peaceful nation and dethroned their queen.
